KATU: “Davis joins Hope as Doernbecher’s second therapy dog on staff”

KATU – October 23rd, 2018

PORTLAND, Ore. – Another canine companion has joined the ranks at Oregon Health & Science University’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

Davis the dog has joined Hope, making Doernbecher one of just a handful of other children’s hospitals in the country to have more than one therapy dog on staff.

The dogs are trained to provide comfort to patients.

Physicians say no kid wants to be at the hospital, but Davis helps bring a bit of normal life to Doernbecher.

“As a physician, I walk down the hall and no one smiles. When I walk down the hallway with Davis, everyone smiles. He just brings a sense of life to the hospital that really is important,” said Dana Braner, Physician-in-Chief at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

As a research hospital, Doernbecher also studies the effects of therapy dogs on patients. They say the healing and happiness the dogs bring to the hospital is nearly unparalleled.

Hope has worked at Doernbecher since 2015.
